What is a passive optical network (PON)?

A passive optical network (PON) is a fibre optic network that uses passive (unpowered) optical splitters to connect a single source to multiple end users (endpoints). Unlike active optical networks, PONs don’t require any electrical power to distribute the signal once it’s sent across the network increasing reliability and reducing operating costs. The PON network demonstrates how our products interconnect across the entire access infrastructure. At the central office, OLTs equipped with Semtech's high performance analog solutions route traffic through passive splitters to ONUs (Optical Network Units) in individual homes and businesses Fiber-to-the-room technology extends this capability with additional splits inside homes and businesses, providing dedicated access points in individual rooms. This approach enables ultra-high bandwidth for gaming, streaming, interactive applications, and the growing demands of smart home technology that requires maximum performance in every space.
